Lesson 33: The Mountain Tree (Color Drawing)

For the remaining lessons provide children with "the standard colors," which are red, yellow, blue (primary colors), orange, green, violet (secondary colors), brown, and black. Continue practicing drawing a margin line around your works this week.

Instructors show children the lesson image and relate:

  • The lesson image shows a landscape.
  • A landscape is a picture representing a scene by land or sea, actual or fancied, the chief subject being the general aspect of nature, as fields, hills, forests, and water.

Instructors demonstrate to children how to recreate the landscape:

  • With a free, even stroke, place a light wash over the whole, making it even and as smooth as possible.
  • With a heavier stroke, wash in the grass, mountain, and tree leaves.
  • With a still heavier stroke, wash in the tree trunk and treed horizon line.

Children complete the following drill work - recreate the lesson image using the described colors:

  1. Black. Color the entire picture with black.
  2. Blue. Color the entire picture with blue.
  3. Yellow and Violet. Place a wash of violet over the whole. Make the mountain a little darker. Place a wash of yellow over the foreground and tree, and then finish with violet.
  4. Yellow and Violet. Place a wash of yellow over the whole. Make the mountain with a heavy wash of violet, and the foreground finish with violet and yellow.
  5. Blue and Orange. Place a wash of blue over the whole, making the mountain stronger than the sky. Place a wash of orange over the foreground and tree. Finish the foreground with blue and orange.
