Lesson 131: Review 2 - Long Vowel Sounds (Word Building)
The instructor:
Asks each child to repeat the following sounds
Short a (as in at)
Long a (as in ate)
Short i (as in hid)
Long i (as in hide)
Short o (as in rob)
Long o (as in robe)
Short u (as in cut)
Long u (as in cute)
Short e (as in egg)
Long e (as in he)
Shows each word in the list and asks children to sound out the word. (Do not tell children the words. Let them figure it out on their own with prompting as necessary.)
Points out to children that the 'e' on the end of the words is silent, but it often changes the preceding vowel from short to long.
Asks children to build the lesson words out of tiles and to point at each tile while making the associated sound.
Mastery occurs when the instructor points to any word on the list and children can sound it out on their own.
