DEFINITIONS
A mountain is a vast and steep elevation of land.
A volcano is a mountain which sends out fire, smoke, and lava.
A hill is an elevated location smaller and gentler in rise than a mountain.
A valley is an elongated depression between hills or mountains, often with a river flowing through it.
An island is a contiguous area of land, smaller than a continent, totally surrounded by water.
A peninsula is a piece of land projecting into water from a larger land mass.
A lake is a large, landlocked stretch of water.
An isthmus is a narrow strip of land, bordered on both sides by water, and connecting two larger landmasses.
A strait is a narrow channel of water connecting two larger bodies of water.
A cape is a piece or point of land, extending beyond the adjacent coast into a sea or lake.
A plain is a flat expanse of land.
A bay is a body of water (especially the sea) more or less three-quarters surrounded by land.
A river is a large and often winding stream which drains a land mass, carrying water down from higher areas to a lower point, ending at an ocean or in an inland sea.
